Split series versus the Brock Badgers

A win and a loss on the road for the Hawks

ST. CATHERINES, Ont.- The Laurier Hawks traveled to Community Park in St. Catherines on Wednesday where the Brock Badgers played host to a double header series. The Badgers took the first game 3-1, but Laurier bounced back to win game two 7-3.
 
The Hawks got off to a rough start against Badger pitcher Mickey Campeanu (Mississauga, Ont.), who threw out the first four batters of the game. Things in the field looked better for the purple and gold though, with James Bruce (Waterloo, Ont.) making two stellar catches in right field, and Scott Mahn (Kitchener, Ont.) finishing a tough play to Brian MacDonald (Markham, Ont.) at first base.
 
At bat, Chris Pittaway (Paris, Ont.) hit a double, MacDonald singled, and Pat Kropf (Waterloo, Ont.) earned an RBI to set the score at 1-0 for Laurier. Another couple of catches in the field by Bruce, and a set of plays by Mahn, MacDonald, and Ryan Panas (Toronto, Ont.) on the third bag, kept things looking promising for Laurier.
 
It was at the plate where the team failed to perform, with the Brock pitcher throwing a total of seven strike outs by the end of the game, and giving up only four hits. For Laurier, Josh Robinson (Burlington, Ont.) came in to relieve Matt Hall (Oakville, Ont.) who had a good run on the mound.
 
A crucial error at second base brought in two important runs for Brock, and for the remainder of the game the Hawks failed to earn them back, losing 3-1.
 
In game two, Wes Van Luven (Orillia, Ont.) started off pitching for Laurier. Bringing in Steve Ayotte (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and Kropf for the first two runs of the game was Elliot Shrive (Rockwood, Ont.). A single from Mahn allowed another in.
 
Stolen bases by MacDonald and Kropf helped in earning two more runs for the team. Brock retaliated in the third scoring two runs. But Laurier sealed the deal with Mike Ruetz (Waterloo, Ont.) scoring, and Panas hitting a triple to bring Mahn in.
 
Rookie Trent Barwick tried his hand in pitching for Laurier, and finished off a strong game, giving up only one run.
